Bohol to Cebu

Getting from Bohol to Cebu catches people out for one reason: there is no flight. The two islands are close enough that the sea crossing has always done the job, so the plan has to be built around a boat and a pier rather than a departure gate. The good news is that this is the busiest ferry corridor in the region, so you have real choice of sailing - which makes it the opposite planning problem from the thin onward hops to Siquijor or Camiguin. This guide covers which of the three sea gateways to leave from, and how the departure day actually runs.

There is no Bohol to Cebu flight - it is a ferry

This is the single most useful thing to know before you plan the day. Bohol-Panglao International Airport handles jets and international charters, but Cebu is not on its route map: the scheduled services run to Manila, Clark, Davao, Iloilo and El Nido, alongside the Korean and Japanese routes. The two islands face each other across a short stretch of water, and the crossing has always been the sensible way to cover it.

Do not spend time looking for a Bohol-Cebu flight; the ferry is the route, not a budget fallback.
The airport still matters if you are leaving Bohol for Manila or abroad - that is a different departure day, and a different transfer.
Because it is a boat, the fixed point in your day is a sailing and a check-in time, not a gate.

Sail from Tagbilaran unless you are already up north

Tagbilaran City port is Bohol's capital and main sea gateway, and it is where the Cebu corridor really lives. Several operators have run the crossing over the years and the line-up has changed, so confirm who is sailing on your date rather than assuming - but the main operator's published daily schedule lists sailings in each direction from early morning to early evening, roughly hourly for most of the day. That density is the whole reason this trip is easy to plan: if one boat is full, the next is not far behind.

Tagbilaran is the closest pier to Panglao, Alona, Tagbilaran city hotels and the inland countryside loop, so it is the right choice for most stays.
Compare that with the thin onward hops - the Siquijor crossing publishes only a handful of sailings - and you can see why Cebu is the forgiving direction to travel in.
Schedules do change. Check the operator you are booking with before you fix the rest of the day, and treat the sailing you actually hold as the anchor.

Tubigon and Getafe are the northern gateways

Bohol has two more sea gates on its northern side, and they earn their place when your stay is already up there. Tubigon sits on the north-west coast and is the established alternative, including for RORO-style crossings if you are moving a vehicle. Getafe is a coastal municipality on Bohol's north shore facing the Visayan Sea, and the main operator publishes a Cebu crossing from there too, with a few sailings each way rather than an all-day service.

Leaving from a northern or western stay? Tubigon or Getafe can cut a long road leg out of the departure day.
Staying on Panglao or anywhere on the southern half? Sailing from the north is almost always a false economy - you drive further to catch fewer boats.
Both northern gates run fewer crossings than Tagbilaran, so the sailing has to be booked before the day is planned, not after.

Plan the day backwards: start at the departure time, subtract the check-in the operator asks for, then subtract the drive, and you have your pickup.
If the sailing is late enough, a short countryside or Panglao morning that ends at the pier is a normal departure-day quote - say so in the enquiry, because it changes the vehicle and the luggage the driver allows for.

Carrying on past Cebu City

For a lot of travellers Cebu is a connection rather than the destination - Mactan-Cebu International Airport for a flight home, north to Malapascua, or south to Moalboal. Can I fly from Bohol to Cebu?

No. Bohol-Panglao International Airport is a real international airport, but Cebu is not one of the places it flies to - its scheduled airline routes run to Manila, Clark, Davao, Iloilo and El Nido, plus the Korean and Japanese services. Cebu is close enough that the sea crossing does the job instead, so the trip is a ferry, and the airport only enters the plan when Cebu is a connection to somewhere further and you are flying out of Bohol to reach it a different way.

Which port should I sail from?

Tagbilaran City port for almost everyone. It is the capital and main sea gateway, it is the closest pier to Panglao, Alona and the countryside loop, and it has by far the most sailings to Cebu. Tubigon is the north-west alternative and Getafe the north-coast one; both are worth considering only when you are already staying on that side of the island, because otherwise you spend on the road what you save on the boat.

Do you book the ferry ticket for us?
